Dr Sheel Mehta

Specialising in the treatment of prostate cancer and bladder cancer.

Dr Sheel Mehta is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in the treatment of prostate cancer and bladder cancer. She combines highly specialised technical expertise with a commitment to helping patients understand their diagnosis and navigate the treatment choices that are right for them.

She qualified from medical school at University College London in 2010, graduating with distinctions in Medicine and Surgery, and undertook a clinical placement at Harvard University. Her oncological training was completed at the Royal Marsden Hospital, Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, and the Royal Surrey County Hospital, where she went on to complete a Diploma in Oncology and a fellowship in Brachytherapy.

Sheel was appointed as a substantive NHS Consultant at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in 2021. Alongside her NHS appointment she sees private patients at GenesisCare Surrey in Guildford.

Her clinical practice covers treatments for prostate and bladder cancer, including systemic therapy (chemotherapy, immunotherapy and hormone therapy) and image-guided radiotherapy. Her fellowship was in brachytherapy, in which tiny radioactive seeds are implanted directly into the prostate to deliver a concentrated dose of radiation. She does not perform brachytherapy herself.

She maintains an active research programme in radiotherapy and brachytherapy, working closely with the Royal Surrey County Hospital brachytherapy group. Her published work focuses on long-term survival and quality-of-life outcomes following low-dose-rate brachytherapy for prostate cancer, including studies on net survival at population scale and the role of focal hemi-gland treatment for unilateral disease.

Sheel is also a public advocate for better awareness of prostate cancer. She has written on the subject for the Guernsey Press, contributing to the national conversation prompted by Sir Chris Hoy's diagnosis. Her commentary, which has also appeared on Bridgehead Communications' health platform, draws together clinical evidence and practical guidance to help men and their families ask the right questions when facing a diagnosis.

She holds a fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists and is a member of both the Royal College of Physicians and the European Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ESTRO).
